Materials Needed:

  1. Cotton Fabric - Soft and absorbent for the top layer that touches the skin.
  2. Terry Cloth or Bamboo Fabric - For the absorbent core.
  3. PUL Fabric (Polyurethane Laminate) - Waterproof layer for the bottom to prevent leaks.(Shower curtain, vinyl table cloth, or similar can work to create the barrier)
  4. Snaps or Hook and Loop Fasteners - For securing the pad around the underwear.
  5. Sewing Machine and Thread
  6. Scissors
  7. Pins or Fabric Clips
  8. Pattern Paper (or any paper to make patterns)
  9. Tailor's Chalk or Fabric Marker

Pattern Making:

  1. Draw the Base Pattern: Create a rectangular shape with rounded ends. You can adjust the size based on the desired coverage:
    • Small: 6 inches long x 2.5 inches wide (when folded).
    • Medium: 8 inches long x 3 inches wide (when folded).
    • Large: 10 inches long x 3.5 inches wide (when folded).
  2. Add Flaps: Extend flaps from the narrower sides for the snaps or fasteners. Each flap should be about 2 inches long.

Cutting the Fabric:

  • Cut 1 piece each of cotton, terry cloth, and PUL fabric per the pattern sizes. Make sure the grain of the PUL and cotton fabric are aligned correctly for better fit and comfort.

Sewing Instructions:

  1. Layer the Pieces:
    • Place the PUL fabric down first with the waterproof side facing down.
    • Place the terry cloth on top of the PUL.
    • Place the cotton fabric last, right side facing up.
  2. Pin or Clip Together: Secure the layers with pins or fabric clips.
  3. Sewing:
    • Sew around the perimeter, leaving about a ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave a small opening (2 inches) un-sewn for turning the pad right side out.
    • Clip the rounded edges to ensure a smooth curve when turned right side out.
  4. Turn Right Side Out: Carefully turn the pad right side out through the opening. Use a point turner or a blunt pencil to smooth out the curves.
  5. Topstitch: Topstitch close to the edge all around the pad, which also closes the opening used for turning.
  6. Add Snaps: Attach snaps on the wings/flaps ensuring they align properly when the pad is folded over the underwear.

  • Rounded rectangle with wings at sides for snaps.

Notes:

  • Absorbency: For heavier flows, consider adding more layers of terry cloth between the top and waterproof layers.
  • Washing and Care: Use a mild detergent and cold water to wash the pads. Avoid fabric softeners and bleach to maintain absorbency and softness.
