We have included this excellent quality lantern/ flashlight in our boxes for many years. We lay them horizontally at the end of the box, and we are able to include a soccer ball, and pack them up with lots of other stuff. Kids love to play with flashlights at night, and it is also a useful item for any family. We upgraded the ABS material to virgin plastic rather than recycled which improves the strength of the body; and had these packaged in a simple bubble wrap envelope so that they fit neatly and safely in a box and are ready for travel. Although these come with a charging chord, they will fully recharge with the solar cells. The batteries are included and are NiMH , not Lithium.
Two packaging & Plug options:
- Bubble wrapped with no box for retail with type A plug.
- Boxed for resell with USB plug.

Frequently Asked Questions
Solar Lantern FAQ
What are the dimensions of the solar lantern?
When closed, the lantern measures 4.69" tall, 3" in diameter at the light end, and 2.13" at the solar end — intentionally designed to fit perfectly into an Operation Christmas Child shoebox without wasted space.
How many watts does it use?
The lantern uses less than 1 watt, making it highly efficient while providing reliable light for families who may not have access to electricity.
How is it packaged?
Each lantern is packaged in a protective bubble-wrap envelope.
There is no cardboard box — this reduces waste, keeps costs down, and ensures the lantern fits easily into shoeboxes without adding unnecessary garbage for families overseas.
Is the lantern FCC compliant?
Yes. The lantern is FCC tested as required by U.S. law, and the FCC label is printed on the packaging to meet compliance standards.
What type of battery does it use?
Our lanterns use NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries.
This means there is no lithium, which makes them safer for international shipping and for shoebox packing.
What makes these lanterns more durable than lower-priced options?
Many low-cost lanterns on the market are made from recycled plastic, which often results in cracking — especially at the solar panel connection point.
Our lanterns are made with new ABS plastic, which is:
Significantly more durable
Shoebox-packing safe
Able to pass California Proposition 65 safety testing
Built to avoid breakage during shipping or packing
We have not had any reports of these units arriving broken or breaking during packing.
Why is this a great gift for shoeboxes and ministry?
Solar lanterns are one of the most practical and impactful gifts you can send. Many of the families who receive shoeboxes:
Live in areas with little or no electricity
Rely on candles or kerosene for light
Have children who study or play after dark without safe lighting
These lanterns:
Charge fully by the sun
Offer up to 50,000 hours of rechargeable life
Provide both a flashlight and a lantern mode
Are useful for every household, even those with electricity
Are loved by children simply because kids love flashlights
A solar lantern gives a child safety, joy, and hope — and serves their whole family.

Customers praised this rechargeable solar lantern for being "very bright" with "excellent quality." Reviewers appreciated its versatility as both lamp and flashlight, sturdiness, and ease of use. One shopper noted it's "perfect for any time that light may be needed." However, one customer was disappointed the plug is USA-only.

They are a great size and the light is very bright. Great quality and well made.
These truly are awesome. It's a perfect gift for a shoebox. It's definitely a "wow" gift that doesn't take up too much space so you can add lots more to your box. The light is bright and it's very easy to use. Thanks for another great product. I will be ordering more!
The plug is only for USA plugs, so was disappointed I couldn’t use them in the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. They do work well and I’ll just use them here at home.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review Linda,
These lanterns are fully solar rechargeable, and the solar panels have been tested for approximately 50,000 hours of use.
Regarding the plug, while it is a Type A plug, that does not mean it is limited to use in the United States. Many of the countries that receive Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes use Type A outlets, including much of Central and South America.
For countries such as the Philippines, where the standard voltage is 220V, the lantern is specifically designed to operate on that voltage as well. We have confirmed this with both the manufacturer and a customer in the Philippines who successfully uses the lantern there.
The biggest advantages of this lantern is that it is primarily intended to be charged by the built-in solar panel, so access to electricity is not required for normal use.
These lights are both lamps and flash-lights and are so easy to use for any age. They come with a charger and are perfect for any time that light may be needed, whether it is while camping, reading late at night in bed, or during a blackout. Our grandkids keep these right next to their beds at night and love to “Read by the Light of the Lantern”. We look forward to using them on our picnic tables for evening time get togethers this Spring! Excellent quality and an amazing price!
Are there instructions in Spanish (or other languages) so the child will know
that the light is also solar powered?
Thank you
Thank you for your question!
The lantern itself does not include printed instructions inside the package. For that reason — we created free quick-start instructions in multiple languages, including Spanish, so children and families can understand that the lantern can also be charged by solar power.

The Plug for the charger is a USA style plug. How will that work for countries that have different plug styles?
The solar lanterns are fully rechargable without any electricity what-so-ever. They simply need to place it where this a light source, preferably the sun but artificial light works.
Also, the following countries use the USA style plug, either soley or in conjuction with other styles: American Samoa, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bonaire, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Japan, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Mexico, Micronesia, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.)
This list includes countries that use only USA-type plugs and those that use them in conjunction with other plug types.
